Do Baby Wipes Cause Diaper Rash?

Every baby has tender, sensitive skin that is still developing and is more susceptible to the effects of bacteria and external irritants. When it comes to diaper rashes, your baby may seem to suffer more so than usual, causing you to wonder the reasons why.Do Diaper Wipes Cause Diaper Rash

You may have tried several topical creams and natural rash ointments without seeing much healing.

One thing many parents do not think about when trying to soothe and heal diaper rash is the box of baby wipes they are using at every diaper change. You may wonder: “Do baby wipes cause diaper rash?”

It’s All About The Preservatives

Every parent enjoys the convenience of baby wipes, especially during road trips or shopping at the mall all day. However, if your baby seems to have a great deal of trouble with rashes, you may be making them worse by using baby wipes. Most brands of wipes contain chemicals that used for preserving the wipes, protecting against the growth of mold and bacteria due to moisture content. Two common preservatives used in most brands of baby wipes are methylisothiazoline (MIT) and methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI). Both of these preservatives have been found to increase skin irritation, even more so in babies with extremely sensitive skin.

Coupling Baby Wipe Chemicals With Diaper Irritants

Using baby wipes on a regular basis can cause your little one to become sensitized to the preservatives used in them. When your baby becomes sensitized to an irritant, the risk of immune reactions becomes greater, the result being skin rashes. If your baby is experiencing diaper rash due to this type of immune reaction to the preservatives in baby wipes, imagine the increased irritation caused by the chemicals in some disposable diapers. Diapers contain chemicals for providing wicking benefits that help keep moisture away from the skin. While this can be a great benefit, it may not be the case for a baby with super sensitive skin and heightened allergies to irritants.

How To Avoid Diaper Rashes Caused By Baby Wipes

Using warm water and a mild soap to clean up your baby’s bottom during diaper changes can help a lot to reduce the occurrence of rash. If you must travel or take your baby with you shopping, making up a plastic sealed bag of soft, moistened cloths (one bag with cloths containing mild soap and one made with clean, pure water for rinsing after cloths containing soap) for diaper changes is best to avoid using disposable wipes. However, be sure to use a diaper rash ointment during every diaper change to help prevent the skin drying out due to using any type of mild soap.

Controlling your baby’s diaper rash is important for the promotion of his or her good health and comfort. The most comfortable, healthy baby is also the one that is happiest. When your baby is content and happy, you feel happier and more content as well. Always take the time to learn more about any type of skin rash your baby may be experiencing. When asking the question ‘Do baby wipes cause diaper rash?’, remember that chemicals used in them can be harsh.

Are Pole Hedge Trimmers Worth Buying?

One of the trendiest home and yard improvement tools on the market right now are pole hedge trimmers. Available in gas, electric and cordless models, pole hedge trimmers allow the owner to trim hard-to-reach bushes and branches without the manual labor of traditional hedge clippers and the danger of using ladders to reach branches that are too high to be trimmed just by reaching.

A hand saw can come in handy sometimes, but when you have tall branches, you need to have a pole saw.
A hand saw can come in handy sometimes, but when you have tall branches, you need to have a pole saw.

Are pole hedge trimmers worth the investment though? Typically these devices range from $100 to $500 in home improvement and hardware stores and online, which is roughly the combined cost of a manual hedge trimmer and a basic stepladder toward the lower end of that spectrum and encompasses a hedge trimmer, a more expensive ladder and an edge trimmer on the higher end. So is it worth it to buy the pole saw and potentially pay more out the door than you would by buying the more traditional tools a la carte? In our opinion, definitely yes.

I highly recommend investing in a good quality highly ranked electric pole saw and a nice long extension chord. These two items will provide years of low maintenance cutting power with enough juice to cut through really thick branches.

The two main reasons why pole hedge trimmers are worth the investment for homeowners that want to maintain their property are effectiveness and safety. As far as effectiveness is concerned, the extendable pole saw’s ability to reach high branches and bushes are something that a traditional hedge cutter can not duplicate. This can also apply to edging lawns and flower beds, as the length and versatility of the pole cutter does a better job without the operator having to physically contort his or her body. The trimmer’s length can also be beneficial on jobs that require regular reaching ability, as the operator can stand back and get a perspective on how to trim their hedges straight and even.

How Safe are Pole Shrub Pruners?

As far as safety, they are beneficial to this in two ways. First of all, eliminating the use of a ladder in home improvement work is huge for safety. Ladders can be unstable, especially when lurching to reach inconveniently situated thick limbs and long branches, and can open up the homeowner to serious injury from falling with tools.

Also, the need to contort your body to reach certain hedges and branches can cause shoulder and back injuries.  They eliminate the use of a ladder and limit the amount of unsafe movements that need to be done in order to cut down a tree limb the old fashioned way, which helps keep you safe while working around your yard. These trimmers are also pretty light (most are in the 10-20 pound range), so there’s very little risk of injury in that respect as well.

Pole saws can also be economical. While the out-the-door cost might be more, pole hedge trimmers come with multi-year warranties and are extremely durable. While your manual hedge clippers might dull easily and need to be replaced, along with your edger blades, a pole cutter gives optimum performance for years. A lot of people also like the pole saw head attachments with can be placed right on the end of your weed eater which are generally more affordable than buying a completely new saw.

Pole hedge trimmers are trending right now for a reason — they do the job efficiently and well. So if you get a chance, pick one up.

How to Remove Smoke Smell from Leather

A smell that has the tendency to linger, cigarette smoke can cling to a variety of fabrics and surfaces, which can make for quite the offensive smell for anyone who is sensitive to it.

Best Leather Sewing Machine

The smell is truly never welcome, even for someone who does not have any allergies at all. If however, leather is the material that the smoke has clung onto, the problem can seem much larger since leather can be so difficult to clean.

How to remove smoke smell from leather can be quite a mystery to many, which is why a lot of people wind up taking their garments to a professional. Before spending a lot of unnecessary money on this procedure, though, there are ways in which you can get rid of this unwanted smell yourself.

Traditional Cleaners for Leather

You can first try applying leather soap or saddle soap to the garment with a clean cloth. Use it as directed for the best results, than take another clean cloth which has been dampened to “rinse” the garment. Then dry it so that you absorb any excess moisture which could harm the leather.  You’ll want to place the garment outside for two to three hours afterwards to air out, being careful not to put it in direct sunlight which can cause fading.

Vinegar Wash

You can mix equal parts of water and vinegar in a clean spray bottle and then lightly mist it onto the leather garment. Odors can be easily eliminated with vinegar, so this is many times a good solution. Wipe the garment down afterwards with a clean cloth and let it air dry outside, again out of the sunlight.

Baking Soda

Another way in how to remove smoke smell from leather is by liberally applying bake soda on the affected leather and letting it sit overnight. The next morning you can vacuum the baking soda off of the leather, at which time the smell should now be gone. You can repeat this process if needed.

Another trick you can try is to take clean socks that do not have any holes in them and put activated charcoal in them, tying them up very tight. You should fill up two to three socks in this way, and then put them into a big plastic bag along with the affected leather garment. Then tie the bag itself up tightly and put it in a dry, cool place until the next morning. You can then remove the item and check on it to see if the smell has dissipated. You can also repeat this process if needed.

You can always try regular newspaper as well to remove the offensive smoke smell. All you need to do is to wrap the newspaper around the item of leather and put it in a dry, cool place. Newspaper can work because it is well-known for absorbing odors. You should leave your leather item wrapped up in the newspaper for twenty-four to forty-eight hours, and repeat if you need to do so.

As you can see, there are many options in how to remove smoke smell from leather. You want to always avoid using any harsh chemicals or abrasives on this delicate material since it can be damaged quite easily. If the smell still persists after you have tried different methods, then you can speak to a professional leather consultant about what options you might have.

How to Program a Garage Door Opener

These days, people rely on universal remotes to open and close their garage doors. Some are even capable of doing it from a remote in their vehicles. The process of picking out a garage door and getting it installed is a bit hefty and lengthy, but a new door is well worth the time spent.  Once everything is installed, you must then learn how to program a carport door opener. This article will highlight the steps needed to begin operating the remote control for the garage.

How to Program Replacement Garage Door Opener

Programming the Remote Control

If you are only interested in programming a universal remote to have around and about, they are set up a little bit differently from one utilized in a car. Firstly, you’ll need to press and hold the two outside buttons on the universal remotes until a red light is blinking on it. Now, choose which button you’d prefer to open the door with then choose the closing button.

Should I buy a keypad to program to the Garage Door?

The short answer is YES! I cannot tell you how many times I have forgotten my remote somewhere and could not get inside the garage without a keypad. I used the universal garage door keypad reviews site to find one that would work for my brand of opener.

Programming a Universal Remote

Each universal remote comes with a manual filled with garage door brands and codes to connect the remote to. Since each opener is designed differently, you’ll need to press the buttons a certain amount or for a particular length of time for it to properly connect to that specific branded opener. As an example, a brand may require that you hold down the on button for about 5 seconds or to press the button about three times. After the code has been inputted, you’ll need to press down the button you chose for the opening purposes until that red light from before appears again.

To complete the programming, all that is left to do is determine whether the opener has a smart button or a couple of code switches. You can recognize the smart button near the light lens on the back side of your garage door motor. If it is, the final part is simple.Press the smart button of the garage motor and the remote simultaneously for about three seconds and release them both. Most of the newer units come installed with smart button, and switches are rarely used anymore. More than likely this will finalize the programming process. However, if your remote has switches, it’s a little different. Simply input the nine-digit code listed on the garage opener motor and wait for the red light to come on. Once you the red light comes on, voila, the programming is completed.

They can be rented as well but with a hefty price tag. A person can now build their own bounce house with customized features and at a fraction of the price.

how to build a bounce house

How to Build a Bouncy Castle

To construct the bounce house a person is going to need either a piece of strong woven cloth or PVC tarpaulin material, a high powered air blower, and sewing supplies. A person draws out the design for the bounce house. This can include ladders, and other features. When designing the house be conscious of space and the amount of material that is going to be needed. Pay special attention to safety considerations. Also be sure to include a space for the air blower to make the jumper inflatable.

If this seems to be more work than you bargained for, you may want to buy a bouncer and be done with it! If you want to go that route, check out the best bouncy castles, reviewed by people who have actually tried them out.

Once the design is completed along with measurements the material can then be cut to fit the design. Allow a little extra room for sewing or any mistakes that may be made. Sew the material together based on the design. This includes the flooring and special features. Be sure to keep safety in mind. A needle can be used. Be sure to remove all pins once sewing is completed. Once the sewing is completed put the air blower in the appropriate spot and see how the house works. There are templates that are available on the internet to help with plans for construction. These templates can also be used for design and ideas. If the air blower is not inflating the bounce house a more powerful one should be used. Some houses may need additional air blowers to stay inflated.

Even with the costs of these materials making a bounce house will be much less expensive then purchasing or renting one of these houses. It also allows for some great custom features that will be fun for all.

How to fix a Large Hole in Drywall

Fixing a large hole in drywall is not as hard as it may seem. With a few tools and know-how, a person can fix the damage and not be able to tell it was there. In order to start, a person needs to have a few tools and items, which we’ll go over in this article.

Repair Large Hole in Wall

The procedure is basically common sense with the help of the tips we’ll go over in this article.

Tools Needed for the Job:

The items needed to complete this project are a large sheet of paper, a piece of drywall bigger than the hole, some wallboard tape, a marker, a putty knife, wallboard compound, an anchor board, screw gun with screws, utility knife, fine sand paper, primer paint, touch up paint, and a roller with tray. Most of these items you may already have around, but if you do have to get them, they’ll be available if there is the need to patch any holes in the future.

How to begin fixing a big hole in the wall:

First thing needed is to take the large sheet of paper and put it over the hole, then outline the hole onto the paper with a marker. You may want to tape the piece of paper against the wall so it’s steady. Take the utility knife and cut the excess drywall out of the hole, to make the edges smooth. Then take the outlines sketch, cut it out, and out-line a border on the drywall board your using to replace the hole. Now you have the dimensions to cut out the piece needed to fit the hole.

The tip that will help now, is to have an anchor board in place inside the hole. Take the anchor board, which can be a one inch thick board, and place it inside the hole so the sides are behind the wall. Then screw the board to the wall from the sides that are past the hole on both sides of the wall. Now that the anchor board is securely fastened to the wall, you can place the patch in the hole.

Now that the patch is fitted in the wall, screw the patch to the anchor board in the middle. Next, you’ll need to take the wallboard tape and tape the edges of the patch to the wall. After the patch is securely in the wall, it’s time for the finishing touches. Take the wallboard compound and apply it over the entire patch with a putty knife. Now, you are ready to start the touch up painting process.

When the wallboard compound dries, then take a fine sandpaper and sand it smooth. After this take a tack cloth and remove all the excess material which was sanded off. Now, you can apply some primer paint, which can’t be skipped over if you don’t want it to stand out from the wall around it. After the primer is dry, apply the touch up paint. If the rest of the wall was painted with a roller, then use a roller instead of a brush, as the finished look will be different. Likely the rest of the wall would have been painted over by a roller, you can tell if it has brush strokes or not. Now, the patch should be in place and undetectable to sight or touch.

Although having a large hole in the drywall may seem devastating, it can be repaired without too much of an effort. With a few tools and these tips, you should be able to patch up any large holes in drywall that may occur.

How to Restore a Cast Iron Skillet with Ovens and Oven Cleaners

No matter the reason you are wondering how to restore a cast iron skillet, you should know that it is very possible to bring it back to its clean, original start. Normally these types of skillets are seasoned, which means that the fat molecules from cooking in the pan have bonded to the iron and any other fat molecules that are there already in a previous seasoning layer. So, with a bit of work, this seasoning can be removed by the same type of methods used to clean up any kind of large, greasy mess. If you can’t restore your skillet with a good cleaning, check out the enameled cast iron cookware reviews for the best ranked enamel skillets.

Best Cast Iron Skillet

Oven Cleaning Method

One way that is popular is to just put the pan in your oven and put it through the self-cleaning cycle. This feature on modern ovens can heat the interior of your oven to up to 900 degrees Fahrenheit, which turns any kind of organic material such as grease and food, into ash. Even though we usually think of cast iron as fairly indestructible, temperatures this high are actually able to warp or even break the pan, so this method of restoring your skillet is not the most recommended.

Using Oven Cleaners

The more recommended method is using a type of oven-cleaner. Since these are pretty much aerosolized lye, before you even start wear gloves and go outside. You’ll want to put a thick layer of newspaper under the skillet on a fairly flat surface, and completely spray the pan down with the oven cleaner, include the outside and the handle. Try and make an even coating all around, and then you will place the skillet into a garbage bag made of thick plastic and close it up tightly with a tie.

Times may vary, but you want to leave the skillet in the bag for at the very least thirty minutes, but up to several hours, even overnight. After removing it from the garbage bag scrub the skillet with warm, soapy water and dry it thoroughly. If all of the seasoning is not removed the first time, repeat the oven cleaner step. The longer you leave it in the bag will reduce the times you need to keep putting oven cleaner on the pan.

Some also recommend that once the pan is fully restored to rinse it with a few tablespoons of vinegar. It is not a completely necessary step, however, the acidic vinegar will react with and then neutralize any bit of oven-cleaner which was left on the pan.

Remember, once your learn how to restore a cast iron skillet and do so, your skillet is now naked and unprotected. Do not leave it wet from the sink, as it will rust. It can even rust if it is a humid day. To help prevent this further, you should immediately place a new coating of seasoning on your pan. You can do this by preheating your oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit, then use a paper towel to rub in a light, even coating of oil on the surface of the skillet, including the handle. Grape seed oil, canola oil, vegetable oil or even solid vegetable shortening are good options for doing this. Put the skillet in your oven for ninety minutes, and then let it cool to room temperature and wipe off any excess oil.

How to Dethatch a Yard Infested with Thatch

If you have a pesky thatch problem at your house, there are some simple steps that can help you dethatch a lawn. You can use either a machine (dethatcher) to help with the thatch problem or you can attempt it manually. Either way if you follow the proactive suggestions you can even keep the need for dethatching at a minimum.

fertilizer to prevent thatch

First thing to buy for your lawn is a broadcast spreader. This will help to properly fertilize your entire yard evenly and effectively. I checked out the reviews  at Fertilizer Spreader Reviews and their top recommended fertilizer spreader is the Earthway 2150 Spreader.

Grass with thicker growth habits will promote the development of thatch. Choose lawn grass that has lighter density when you are seeding or sodding an outdoor area. If your mind is made up and you just have to get a thick-growing Kentucky bluegrass you should only use this grass in areas that are prone to heavy foot traffic, or blend the bluegrass with a less aggressive selection.

Taller forms of fescue grass and perennial rye-grass cultivars are excellent choices to keep thatch at bay. You should periodically check and make sure that the soil pH is at the correct level. Keeping your lawn aerated and focusing on the correct use of fertilizing products can also help you minimize thatch development. Earthworms and other microbes will also help keep your lawn clean and healthy.

The subject of lawn clippings and the role they play in thatch development are ideas that are still being debated. Usually lawn clippings are a healthy addition to the landscape but if allowed to continue building up over a long period of time these clippings are going to create problems that require you to actively work out a plan to dethatch your lawn.

Manual dethatching is possible but this will require a great deal of time and effort. In most instances you will find it helpful to use one of the special pieces of machinery that has been designed for this type of work. These are either referred to as a dethatcher or lawn scarifier. There are vertical mowing machines that will automatically dig a series of sharp blades down into the ground. This cuts and removes designated areas of thatch. When you use these machines you will slice the thatch and help distribute the nutrients and debris that healthy grass needs.

There are adjustment controls that you can set which will allow you to remove the required depth of thatch from a lawn. You can also use a power rake to dethatch a lawn. This type of lawn equipment uses rotating wire tines that plunge into the grass to eliminate unwanted thatch. A power rake is designed for use in smaller landscapes and does not offer the power and rugged versatility that you will have if you work with a vertical mower.

It is important to understand how to work with the equipment that you choose. When you dethatch a lawn you can remove too much of the underlying turf and be left with an unsightly and stressed-out lawn. This often happens if someone is attempting to dethatch a lawn that has more than two inches of accumulated thatch.

Take your time and work slowly when you are using a power rake or vertical mowing machine for the purpose of dethatching a lawn. Choose a time of year when the turf is not being stressed with drought, high temperatures or other serious climate conditions. These suggestions will make this outdoor maintenance job much easier to accomplish.
