About eight years ago, I asked a friend if she wanted to get a facial with me. Her reply was memorable, “No thanks. I don’t want to pay somebody $80 to pop my zits. I’d rather see a dermatologist and pay the $20 co-pay.” It got me thinking. Why did I get them? Did they really help my skin? Or is it yet another thing I spend money on for no reason? Mother’s Day Started Early!
Prick It With A Pin!
Sometimes you get make-up / skincare / haircare samples in foil packets. It’s a great way to try something before you buy it, right? Well, I am sort of klutzy when it comes to opening these bad boys. Sometimes they are tough to rip open, so I end up with sore fingertips. Or, I have no idea that the liquid inside is super slippery and everything pretty much spills out before I can try it. I figured out a little trick to get the most out of these samples! Continue reading
My Favorite Beauty Products
In case you were looking for some beauty products for someone or for yourself. Here’s my 2¢. I am not an expert, but I really love products. LOVE them. And I don’t wear a ton of make-up every day. There are the things I use pretty regularly. Continue reading
No Longer A Hot Mess Mommy
I LOVE beauty products. But I hate shopping for them. If I buy something that doesn’t work for me and then I’m stuck with it, I’m annoyed. It sits in my bathroom and taunts me as if to say, “Sucka! You spent $30 on me and I don’t do jack!”
I also do not like pushy sales people who want to spray me with fragrance. There are times when I would like to try one product at the department store and a sales rep insists that it looks great but I’m still on the fence and feel pressured to buy it. It is even worse he/she will pester me to try three other items, or do a full makeover and get mad at me if I don’t buy the expected* three items that I eventually don’t want.
* At all department stores, there is an underwritten rule that if you do a ‘free’ makeover with a cosmetics representative, you should buy something. Actually, the makeup artist expects you to purchase at least three things to compensate for his/her time. So, please don’t agree to having someone do your make-up unless you plan to spend. Be honest and say, “I just want to see your colors, but I’m not planning to buy something at this time” and they should leave you alone. If they don’t, walk away. It’s not worth the trouble.
Prior to having a child, I really got a kick out of doing my hair and makeup every day; after Kiddo was born, I was lucky if I had time to take a shower. Things obviously got better as our darling girl grows and I have a bit more time to pay attention to my appearance. But I still do not have time to shop and a limited budget to spend on products. It became more important to find the things I needed that worked for me, worth having a bunch to $40 bottles of useless crap in our bathroom. Thankfully, I found an easier way to try new products without spending a lot, and I’m no longer a hot mess mommy.
A Tale of Two Nail Salons
My lifestyle has changed dramatically since becoming a mom, as it does for a majority of women. One thing I try to make time for is my personal maintenance. I am by no means a glam person, but I try to do home pedicures while watching TV with my husband, get my hair cut regularly, etc. My thought process is this: I’d rather spend my time and money on other things. However, I recently learned there are times when you absolutely get what you pay for.
